BOY SCIENCE GIRL
Eine Arbeit über psychosexuelle Identität, inspiriert von dem
Buch „As Nature Made Him“ von John Colapinto
Kurzbeschreibung:
Geboren als Junge, aufgewachsen als Mädchen – ein Kind wird Opfer
ärztlicher Arroganz. Nicht die Gene, sondern die Erziehung
bestimme das Geschlecht, so die revolutionäre These von
Wissenschaftlern wie Dr. Money. Nach der verpfuschten Beschneidung des
kleinen Bruce rät er den Eltern, ihren Sohn als Tochter zu
erziehen. Doch weder Hormonbehandlung noch Kleider machen aus „Brenda“
ein Mädchen.

2 Meinungsfronten), und das Mädchen (das er sein sollte).
In 1967, after his botched circumcision, the monozygotic twin boy was
surgically altered to live life as a girl and hailed as a medical
triumph, setting a ‘proof’ that our sense of being male or female is
primarily the result of environment, not genetics. The case was a
failure from the outset, and the devastating psychological costs of the
now standard procedure are only today coming to light.
Choosing gender specific symbols like colour coding, stereotypes of
images and objects, the three-split boy-science-girl installation
expresses the complicated, painful and delicate matter of fitting into
a role, which is dictated by society. Collage work out of
illustrations, photography, scanned objects and digital manipulation to
created a visual world of tattoo-like imprints.

Kissen - Schrift Haberdash
The typeface was created to label a project called ‘Insulting Cushions’
which addressed gender related issues and gender specific crafts. A
simple serif font served as a template and the choice of a white thread
on white fabric resulted in a subtle look. The mixing of manual work
with digital manipulation is something that interests me – the work
gains a surface feel and imperfection adds charm and character. As an
addition to this bitmap font, I also created a TrueType character set
made only from the shadows of the original embroidery font. Creating
this typeface with embroidery was a wonderful exercise, very meditative
and a welcome alternative to using the mouse as a design tool.

London brav vor den „ATM“- Bargeldmaschinen auf, um ihren Geldgott zu
huldigen und ihr materialistisches Sündenkonto zu checken. Aber
die Kirchen sind menschenleer. Die Bank ist ihr neuer Gott – das Geld
das Handelsmittel für sündhaft teure Ausgaben und das Konto
als schlechtes Gewissen.
